Darien
I remember the day when we started the climb up the hill
our eyes full of moonshine, momentum-fuelled forces of will
my friend, did I tell you the way I was feeling
the dream was the conquest the sky was the ceiling
now what’s left to be done, it feels now like I’ve had my fill
They told us that all we’d accomplish was waste all our time
but obsession won’t listen to reason or rhythm or rhyme
thought we’d fight our way out of the foothills and then
find a higher plateau and start over again
but now no one but you knows how much this has weighed on my mind
And I know she’s out there somewhere beyond where eyes can see
a motherlode of fortune bode with serendipity
reclines on her veranda as she waits for such as we
somewhere a mirror river run, somewhere a clearer sea
Is that the horizon we’ve only heard rumours about
stretched out beneath us despite all their laughter and doubt
she beckoned and called us from out on the verge
the seasons receded, the seasons resurged
they’ll never know what it is that they’re going without
We hear the stories echo from her seat of embassy
the avenues of polished druse, the laughter from the quay
she speaks from shattered silence underneath her canopy
you’d better move or I will fade, I make no guarantee
All roads lead away again
silently from a peak in Darien
We couldn’t have got here believing in all that they said
what else do we do but climb down now and press on ahead
there are sights to be seen
are you coming my friend
there’ll be chances to rest at the real journey’s end
that ocean of oceans demands that we sail her and cross
though she may see us dead
And I know she’s out there waiting from her realm of sorcery
where grows the balm of peace and calm where freedom’s really free
a paradise eternal, oh she cannot help but be
somewhere a mirror river run, somewhere a greener lea
