Virginia's Song
I hear the waves, I cannot see them
my sight separated by a flimsy yellow blind
I’m half awake, I’m half asleep
struggling to contain myself with surf sight in my mind
oh I’d walk down the stair
feel soft stones and shell shards beneath my soles
let the water wash me clean and shock my soul
still my legs with icy cold if I weren’t too weak to walk
The sun is warm, the wind is cool
passing through these windows this room of my own exhales
the blinds blow in, blow out again
I wonder what I’d find outside if I weren’t so weak and pale
oh I’d walk down the stair
feel soft stones and shell shards beneath my soles
let the water wash me clean and shock my soul
still my legs with icy cold if I weren’t too weak to walk
And I don’t know what carried me here
impossible that I should be here
how could I survive the stinging blasts of sand
these four walls all I can see here
something poured the shell of me here
three guineas set me led and guided by an unseen hand
The sun has set, the moon is rising
someone shut the windows, all inside is still
if I am strong, if I am quiet
I may steal from out of here and execute my plan
where I walk down the stair
feel soft stones and shell shock beneath my soles
let the water wash me clean and shock my soul
paralyse my legs with icy cold
keep on walking, rocks in pocket
permit the sea to take me whole if I weren’t too weak to walk
